GUM DISEASE / PERIODONTICS
What is Gum Disease?
It refers to a process that starts with an overgrowth of bacteria in your mouth that does not get treated properly. It can progress to serious gum damage that has the potential to cause tooth and gum tissue loss.
What are Some Causes of Gum Disease?
About 30% of Americans are genetically predisposed to gum disease and could be 5 or more times likely to develop it than other people. Plaque is the main cause of gum disease, but other factors contribute to gum diseases as well. Poor oral hygiene, illnesses such as diabetes or cancer, certain medications, hormonal changes from menopause or pregnancy and smoking are all major causes.
What are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?
It is easy for us to spot someone who is suffering from gum disease. They will have gums that bleed easily and are swollen and tender, halitosis (chronic bad breath), a foul tasted in the mouth, loose teeth with pockets next to the gums and changes in their bite. Unfortunately, you may not realize that you have got an issue, so it is important to see your dentist regularly so they can detect the first signs of periodontal diseases.
What are Some Ways to Treat Gum Disease?
Nothing beats regular dental cleanings for both preventative and resorative treatment for gum disease and other dental problems. When it comes to gum disease, a hygienist will take the first step and remove any plaque on your teeth. If the plaque is accumulated under the gum line or as deep as the root, we can perform non-surgical scaling and root planning to remove bacteria. For serious cases, we may have to refer you to a periodontist for a full mouth evaluation.
How Can Gum Disease be Prevented?
As we said, never skip regular cleanings, which we recommend every six months. This is the best way to catch issues before they accelerate. At home, make sure you exercise impeccable dental hygiene including proper brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily and using antiseptic mouthwash. Eat healthful foods and, if you are a smoker, we advise you to quit.
